How to verify my account?

Verifying your account, once all the documents have been accepted is an easy 2 stage process. To fully activate your Trading212 account and start your investing journey you need to do the following steps.

1. Provide a copy of a valid ID document


  • EEA citizens can provide an International passport, National Identity Card or Driving license.
  • Non-EEA citizens can only provide an International Passport.

The EEA stands for the European Economic Area, as of January the 31st 2020 the UK is no longer part of the EU/EEA member state.

2. Provide a selfie*

Trading212 may require additional valid proof of address as per their guidelines.

What are the ID document requirements?

Trading212 requires an ID document which contains 5 of the following bits of information:

  • First and last name
  • Date of birth
  • Valid expiration date
  • Document number
  • Entirely visible two-line code at the bottom of the page

For EEA citizens these documents could include Passport, National ID or driving license, compared to Non-EEA citizens which can only provide an International passport as proof of ID.

Why does Trading212 need a copy of your ID?

As Trading212 is a licenced brokerage, being regulated by the FCA, to be compliant they are obliged to identify every client with ID documents.

By verifying your identity is essential for your own safety.

By Trading212 requesting your ID they are acting in accordance with Anti Money laundering (AML) and their Know Your Customer (KYC) policies.


Is it safe to send Trading212 a copy of my ID?

Trading212 is a licensed controller of personal data and a brokerage which is regulated by the FCA and CySEC. To be in accordance with these regulators Trading212 has a duty to keep your information safe.

All information provided to Trading212 is kept confidential and in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) policy and is used for identification purposes only.

What is the proof of address requirements?

Trading212 accepts multiple types of documents which they can accept as proof of address. The document can be sent as either PDF or sent as an official letter.

Acceptable Proof of address for all clients

  • Bank statements
  • Bank certificate
  • Credit card statement
  • Statement of fees
  • Tax letter/bill
  • Utility bill
  • Broadband internet bill
  • Landline phone bill

Documents should not be any older than 6 months.

What is the proof of address requirements for Non-EEA residents?

For those who apply and are Non-EEA residents registering under Trading212 UK, they only accept valid bank account statements that are not older than 3 months and have been issued in the branch of the bank.

This document can be delivered as a paper letter or downloaded in PDF format.

Typically the PDF format of the bank statement can be downloaded from online banking.

If you are not able to provide a bank statement with a full address on it then Trading212 can accept additional proof via one of the following types of documents: Utility bill (gas, water or electricity), landline phone bill, broadband internet bill, drivers licence or national ID card with an existing address on.

Trading212 does not accept Credit card statements as proof of address for residents of Non-EEA countries.

Why is my proof of address rejected?

Sometimes proof of address may be rejected, typically these documents are not dated within the last 3 months or maybe cropped, not showing the full details of the document.

Trading212 may not accept the following documents as proof of address if:

  1. The proof is a receipt
  2. The proof is a delivery invoice
  3. The document is an Insurance bill
  4. Any handwritten documents
  5. Mobile phone bills
  6. Bills issued to a business account name

Proof of address will only be accepted if:

  1. The document is issued in your name
  2. Showing full valid address
  3. Dated within the last 3 months
  4. Showing full details of a document (If cropped it may not be accepted)

Why is my bank account statement not accepted?

There can be a multitude of reasons why your bank statement may not be accepted by Trading212, mainly if the document is more than 3 months old or it has little to no transactions on the statement.

Make sure that your bank account statement has the following information clear and readable:

  1. Your full name
  2. Full residential address
  3. Account number/IBAN
  4. Date of issue

What is the PEP declaration used for?

PEP stands for “politically exposed person” and is a declaration for those who are holding high public office.

The PEP declaration is required under the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedure and an Anti-Money-laundering-precaution.

It is used to identify customers who are potentially at high risk of bribery and corruption by the power of their position and any influence they may hold.

People who may need to sign the PEP declaration include those with the following roles and/or positions:

  • Government Officials
  • Political Party Officials
  • Senior Executives
  • Relatives and Close Associates

How can I update my name on Trading212?

There can be a multitude of reasons why you may wish to change your name on your account such as:

  • Legal Name Change
  • Name Change after Marriage
  • A typo in the name

As each situation has a different reason for a name change, they shall be reviewed separately.

If you legally change your name you may have to present an up-to-date ID document that contains the updated name and an official document which acknowledges your legal name change and is stamped by the issuing institution.

If you have changed your name after marriage you will have to present an up-to-date ID document that contains the updated name and a marriage certificate.

If there was a typo whilst registering the account Trading212 will request an up-to-date ID document that contains the correct name.

May Trading212 require more documents after my account is verified?

Trading212 may require additional documents as a part of risk management measures. The document that might be requested could be proof of address. This could be due to wanting to make sure information on customers is up to date or to ensure that accounts meet the required standard.

Getting Trading212 account verification typically doesnt take more than 72 hours providing that the correct documents are submitted with fully complies with their policy such as no cropped documents.

The easiest way is to have a bank statement no more than 3 months old in PDF from, which is downloaded from your online banking page. This document is very much the same one as if you are applying for a mortgage. Couple the bank statement with a driving licence which is valid and has the same address as the statement then it typically goes smoothly.

Trading212 is traditionally speedy with the sign up process though it may take longer if they wish to thoroughly review all documents.
